A further prosecution in 1889 resulted in three months’ imprisonment. Marbled paper coverings show surface rubbing and wear. External joints are cracked and split in places, most markedly on Nana, where portions expose underlying binding material. His Masterpiece? has a pronounced scuff across the spine title panel, while Germinal shows vertical cracking in the spine leather. Gilt decoration and lettering remain largely legible and visually appealing. Paper shows age toning and scattered foxing, particularly noticeable on Germinal’s opening leaves. Marbled endpapers show wear along their folds. The bindings require careful handling, and Nana is the most worn volume of the group.
