A rare letter handwritten by a young man named David to his mother. It is undated but certainly pre-dates 1900.

The name of the mother is not identified in the letter. Notwithstanding its lack of date, from the paper and handwriting, it is quite reasonable to assume this letter was written in the later 19th century.

David has obviously fallen on hard times and has received financial help from his mother--and now needs more:

“I received your kind remittance and it came most appropriately for I could not get work and was under drink and God has sent the Holy Virgin in a special way to make me love you more properly than I have done yet.”

His letter alludes to not only his desperate situation but to the illness and poor health of others. He has lost his girlfriend due to his poverty, and the pain of that echoes in his words. There is mention of “Andrew,” who is with his mother, and the Elliots, with whom she is staying.

The letter measures approximately 4.5 inches by 4 inches and is in good condition. The handwriting is legible. While we do not know the location from which this letter originates, the letter contains the address “152 King St. East.” It was found with some inventory items from Hamilton, Ontario, and so may have originated near there.
