1870s Letter from a Young American Woman Attending School To Her Parents Back Home
10180On offer is a lovely note written in the early 1870s by an American student named Minnie from Mona, Utah to her parents. The note bears the letterhead “LSC” but there is no further information.
The letter is a chatty note describing a short trip she took to visit family. In it she talks about possible plans to attend a temperance lecture and the social activities of her cousin, mentioning among other things that she had a number of ‘callers’. She ends by saying that she couldn’t stay as she had to return to school.
For a gender studies program, this breezy letter to her parents hints at a comfortable lifestyle. Her parents obviously had the money to send her to school which was not at all common for young women in those days.
The letter measures 7.75 inches by 5.75 inches. It is comprised of a single sheet folded to create a 4-page note. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is legible.
