On offer is a fine example of a receipt for a commercial financial transaction in late 19th century France. The document was drawn on the 19th of August, 1898. It is a promissory note covering the costs of a commercial transaction.

An excerpt of the text follows:

Au trente une decembre prochain, je payerez que cetter lettre dechange a Monsieur Dubois ou a son ordre... la Somme de Deux Cents trente Sept francs valleur [] de dit le marchandises pour [] commerce...

[Translation: On the thirty-first of December next, I will pay this letter of exchange to Monsieur Dubois or to his order ... the Sum of Two Hundred and Thirty Seven francs worth [] of said goods for [] trade...]

Our informal research has not been able to find any additional information about the parties to this promissory note. At the time, this sum was the equivalent of approximately US$2,500-US$3000 and approximately the wages earned by a labourer in 6 months indicating that it is a significant transaction.

For an economist or social historian, this small item is an example of the vibrant commercial world that existed in France in the final years of the 19th century.

This small, single-sided document measures 3.75 inches by 9.25 inches. The paper is in good condition. It bears three stamps, one printed with what may be a registration number and two that are embossed onto the paper. The handwriting is legible.
