On offer is a petition from a French doctor in the very early days of the French Revolution.

In this letter, a Doctor Moulet is writing to the medical college in Montauban, France. In his letter, he expresses the desire that the College will respect the terms of the “Loi de 1791” which conferred certain tax benefits on professionals such as himself. To bolster his case, he includes a precis of the Loi. It would appear that the College has not respected the provisions of this law.

These were turbulent times in France and indeed some 6 months later the monarchy would be overthrown and the French Revolution would be fully underway. For a historian, especially of the French Revolution, the precis of the Loi de 1791 offers an excellent opportunity to see how such laws were seen and interpreted by the citizenry.
