c1930s ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN YOUNG GIRL'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BOOK OF POETRY, ESSAYS, STORIES AND A LITTLE ARITHMETIC

On offer is a sweet manuscript journal of stories and poetry and some arithmetic handwritten by the young [we estimate 8 or 9 years old] Hazel Barrett, Sugar Road, Warwick, New York attending the Warwick elementary school, circa 1930s we speculate, as evidenced by the title and photograph of the school on the paper cover. The first few pages are stories with scenes cut from a publication that illustrate the story. Pages of song lyrics, Captain Jinks, "I'm Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines, I feed my horse on corn and beans. - I joined the corps when twenty one and of course I thought capital fun"; or Juanita, "In thy dark eyes splendor- weary looks yet tender - Nita Juanita let me linger by thy side be my own fair bride…" and old Americana standards like Old Black Joe, The Battle Hymn of the Republic to name a few. There are pages with multiplication tables, styles of crosses, poetry. Partial black cloth on the binding of the book, the binding of the cover beneath is in tact. A few pages are loose but are in place. On the cover in ink is the name of the student and her address.
