On offer is an original signature of Governor Hudson Lowe (1769-1844), an Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator appointed to oversee the incarceration of Napoleon Bonaparte. He became Governor of St. Helena the year following his appointment as Napoleon's gaoler on the island. His constant paranoia of the rescue of the deposed leader led to allegations of heavy-handedness and tactlessness.

This signature is on paper pasted to a card bearing Lowes name in a different hand. Some edges are torn with minor impact upon the text and the item is age toned. Date is unknown. Condition is Fair.
