On offer is this example of the signature of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), British social theorist and Whig writer often cited as the first female sociologist. Name and date: "Harriet Martineau / Febry 16th, 1835".

Martineau wrote many books and a multitude of essays from a sociological, holistic, religious, domestic, and perhaps most controversially, feminine perspective; she also translated various works from Auguste Comte. She earned enough to be supported entirely by her writing, a rare feat for a woman In the Victorian era.

This signature is on a small piece of paper 2-½ x 3-¾ inches. A number of pin holes and corner tear, otherwise Good condition.
