On offer is a short letter to S. A. Christie, signed by Janet Hanning, but written in a different hand. Dated June 30, 1883 it reads:

Hamilton Ontario
June 30/83
Dear Sir,
In reply to your letter allow me to say that having parted with much of the correspondence, I am unable to oblige you.
Yours truly
Janet C Hanning
S.A. Christie Esq.

Janet (Jenny) Carlyle Hanning was the youngest sister of her brother, the famous Scottish author and philosopher Thomas Carlyle. She was married in Scotland in 1836 to Robert Hanning (1813-1878) who emigrated to Hamilton, Ontario Canada, in 1841 without his Jenny who joined him 10 years later in 1851. They lived at 15 Murray Street West in Hamilton for many years and had a family of four daughters. Robert Hanning died from heart disease in 1878. Janet continued to live in the family home on Murray St. until the 1880s, then moved to Oakville and finally died in Toronto in 1897. She was the "last of the Carlyle" extraordinary Scottish Carlyle family.

S.A. Christie whom the letter is written to, is probably interested in the many letters (correspondence) that was sent to her by her famous brother Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) a British historian, satirical writer, essayist, translator, philosopher, mathematician, poet and teacher. Perhaps for the book "Letters to Jenny of Thomas Carlyle to his Youngest Sister” 1899 Cambridge Press Boston New York.

This item is a single page measuring 4-½ x 7-¼ inches. There is a rust stain of a paper clip on the reverse and the left edge indicated tearing from a binding. Very Good condition.
