1897 Letter to an Unnamed Recipient from Squire Bancroft at Berkeley Square
12441On offer is an autographed letter signed on small blind embossed 18 Berkeley Square letterhead. Dated July 28, 1897. Thanking the recipient for a copy of his book, gratefully received.
Sir Squire Bancroft [Squire White Butterfield] (1841-1926) was an English actor and theatre manager. He and his wife Effie Bancroft are considered to have instigated a new form of drama known as ‘drawing-room comedy‘ or ‘cup and saucer drama‘, owing to the realism of their stage sets. Their company is credited with laying the foundations of modern theatrical production.
