On offer is a letter on Treasury Chamber Whitehall, SW, letterhead, with a blind embossed Chancellor of the Exchequer crest. Dated 19/11 [circa 1879 while in office] and sending payment of 10 pounds to an unknown recipient.

George Joachim Goschen (1831-1907), 1st Viscount Goschen was a British statesman and businessman. On the resignation of Lord Randolph Churchill in December 1886, Goschen, though a Liberal Unionist, accepted Lord Salisbury's invitation to join his ministry as Chancellor of the Exchequer in January of 1877 until 1892.  While Chancellor of the Exchequer, in 1888 he introduced the Goschen formula to allocate funding for Scotland and Ireland, thereby reducing the national debt from three percent to two-and-three-quarters percent, and ultimately to two-and-a-half percent.

A single page measuring 4-¾ x 7-⅜ inches with age-toning and some staining. It possesses a horizontal fold crease, and the embossing is crisp and detailed. Good condition.
