On offer is a letter from Martin Farquhar Tupper to Mr. Putman with companion ephemera.

The autograph letter signed on inside of stamped folded letter addressed to Mr. Putman - publisher Waterloo Place, Regent Street, London, now flat. Dated May 5, 1846, Tupper is asking Putman to forward the note and payment. The second item is a printed page with a monochromatic portrait of Martin F. Tupper. Third is a small printed newspaper clipped excerpt of Martin F. Tupper's poem The Anglican Commission at Rome.

Martin Farquhar Tupper (1810-1888) was an English Barrister, writer, poet, and the author of Proverbial Philosophy. Tupper’s humane instincts prompted him to support many reforming movements. He was an early supporter of the Student Volunteer Movement and did much to promote good relations between Britain and America. He tried to encourage African Literature and was also a mechanical inventor in a small way.

History of Putnam: The company began as Wiley & Putnam with the 1838 partnership between George Palmer Putnam and John Wiley, whose father had founded his own company in 1807. In 1841, Putnam went to London where he set up a branch office, the first American company ever to do so. Ten years later, Putnam returned to the United States and the company became known as “George P. Putnam.”

Letter: 8-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches, some soiling, fold creases, and anachronistic notations. Upper right corner has a small fold, the lower right corner is folded and torn, the upper left corner has the tip torn off, and there is a small ‘v’ shaped portion missing at the top edge. Remains of wax seal on the rear.
Picture: 4-3/4 x 7-3/8 inch, some marks and age-tone. Mild creases and softened corners. Some discolouration on edges.
Clipping: 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 inches. Moisture warping from pasting on card and some markings.

All items in Fair condition.
