12472On offer is a signed address card reading,
Murdoch MacKenzie | Changte Ho | North Honan | China

"Changte Ho" is very likely Changde (Changte-fu) in Henan (Honan) province, China, a region associated with historical missionary activities. The change in the names is a result of the standardization of Pinyin romanization after the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
Rev. Murdoch MacKenzie (1858-1938) was Presbyterian/ United Church missionary to China.
He was born in Scotland and studied for the ministry at McGill University and Presbyterian
College, Montreal. In 1889, he went as a missionary to Honan, China for 47 years, and worked there almost continuously until 1936. He acted as a leader in the National Council of China and the movement for a union of churches in China. In 1889 the Presbyterian Church had sent Mackenzie and his first wife as part of the second missionary contingent to North Honan. Known for his sensitivity to Chinese culture and religions, he became a strong advocate of an indigenous self-supporting Chinese church and in 1913 published Twenty-Five Years in Honan, a thoughtful book-length description of the missionary encounter with the native population. He was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada while on furlough in 1913.
