On offer is an original, simply charming 'vade mecum' being a journal, sketchbook and notebook of a young boy, James Petran, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This boy, using an 11 x 9 inch oblong multicolored paged book that was once a salesman's sample book, writes and draws over top the pen and ink titles and sizes, starts the book around the age eight and through to eleven or twelve creates a treasure of 1920s Americana with his drawings of race cars, trains, horses, portraits of friends and scenes of whimsy and everyday life; mention of a secret boys club; he is a HAM radio enthusiast and has handwritten instruction to build and operate a short wave radio. He also creates or transcribes a football game played by Yale vs. Harvard. The vast majority of pages have content and many times both sides of the paper of the 170 hand-numbered pages in all. Collectors and historians will be hard pressed to find a more charming manuscript relic of an early 20th Century/post World War I boy's life. This is a heck of a young fellow.
