c1860s ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT FARRIER JOURNAL AND CASTRATION LOG OF PESHAWAR BASED BRITISH ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY FARRIER WHO WOULD ONE DAY SERVE IN CANADA'S NORTH WEST REBELLION AND FOUND THE BLACK'S PHOTOGRAPHY CHAIN
1360On offer is a super relic of 19th Century British militaria being the original manuscript diary of Charles Black, dated 1870 but having notes ranging from 1864 through 1870, detailing the expenses and duties of his work as a Farrier Sergeant. Beautifully executed with weekly reports specific to his work in the Punjab district with particular note is a list of successful horse castrations performed by the Farrier for various military persons and notables detailing the date, horse's name, age, success of operation and then the signature of the military personnel who had charge of the horse. This is a very interesting insight into this particular military life. Farrier sergeants were found in both artillery and cavalry regiments. They were generally classed as senior sergeants and paid accordingly. Their duties included inspecting the horses of their troops every morning, and reporting any infectious disease immediately to their commanding officer and to the veterinary surgeon. A farrier sergeant was required to attend any British cavalry detachment of 50 or more under. They are in service in the modern forces to this day. Black is interesting as this prominent Englishman who eventually settled in Toronto, Canada and whose descendants would become the founders of the Black's Photography franchise.
