1894 ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK OF A YOUNG ILL FATED FUTURE CHINA MISSIONARY DETAILING HIS EXPERIENCE AT YALE COLLEGE AND DIVINITY SCHOOL
1676On offer is an original, interesting late 19th century scrapbook compiled by Yale College student [John] Lawrence Thurston with dozens of pieces of memorabilia and ephemera relating to Yale dating between about 1894 and 1898 when Thurston graduated. John Lawrence Thurston was an active member of the Yale Foreign Mission Society and after graduating from Divinity School he established the Yale Mission in Changsha, Hunan, China. He organized a tour of the Yale Missionary Band in 1898-1899; was active in the formation of the Yale Foreign Missionary Society; went to China in 1903 to establish Christian higher education in Changsha, Hunan. He contracted tuberculosis and died in Claremont, California a mere six years after compiling the book in 1904. Some of the items contained within this scrapbook include: 1894 Booklet from the Yale Co-operative Corporation Store; 1894 Freshman Class Order of Recitations Card; Yale Academic Calendars for various years; 1895 ticket stub from Yale vs. Princeton baseball game; 1895 New Haven Symphony Orchestra program at Yale University; Gallery Ticket from Yale Harvard Debate circa 1895; Yale YMCA Bible Class Cards and related pamphlets; Yale College Order of Examinations and Semi Annual Examinations for various years; 1897 Wisconsin vs. Yale Regatta Crew Boat Racing Program (corner torn off); Program and ticket from lecture series on Jewish Religious Life After the Exile by Professor Thomas K Cheyne of Oxford; Printed broadside for Student Volunteers at Bristol Congregational Church; Printed leaflets from the Student Missionary Appeal; Numerous newspaper clippings including some relating to missionary work and Yale Foreign Missions; other items include telegrams, handwritten notes, labels, train tickets and various other pieces of ephemera all dating to the late 19th century. This scrapbook is in poor condition and basically falling apart with front cover detached but most of the items pasted into this scrapbook are in good shape. Several pages are blank and there are some ephemeral items removed but overall Fair. BIO NOTES FROM A YALE ONLINE SOURCE: John Lawrence Thurston 1874-1904: John Lawrence Thurston, the son of John Rogers and Caroline Storey Thurston, was born in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, on August 4, 1874. After attending Worcester Academy, Thurston entered Yale College as a member of the class of 1898. While an undergraduate he served as Chairman of the Foreign Missions Committee and after graduation helped organize the Yale Missionary Band's 1898-1899 tour of the eastern United States. From 1899 to 1902 Thurston was a student at the Hartford Theological Seminary. He received his B.D. degree in 1902 and during the same year married Matilda Smyrell Calder of Hartford. While in divinity school Thurston played an active role in the formation of the Yale Foreign Missionary Society and upon completion of his studies was sent to China to select a site for the establishment of the Yale Mission. His efforts resulted in the Hunan Missionary Conference's invitation to the Yale Mission to locate in Changsha, Hunan, and to assume responsibility for Christian higher education in the province. While in China Thurston contracted tuberculosis and was ordered to return to the United States to convalesce.
