In 1862 he enlisted as a private in the 15th Penn. Cavalry. ALS, 1914, 1p, 4to. To Wm. Hayes Ward, Editor of The Independent, dated New York City Feb. 9/14; "I want to congratulate you upon your admirable statement: 'How old is the Universe?' It is most interestingly and kindly put."
