On offer is an original 1972 manuscript book titled 'SUBMARINE DEPOT SHIPS BASES & SUPPORT SHIPS' written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer [CERA] or a plumber as he jokingly called himself, on a number of submarines. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. The preface which describes this book manuscript is as follows: "Among the many books written about submarines, one often comes across a reference to submarine depot ships, bases, parent ships tenders and support ships. This compilation is an attempt to pay tribute to the crews of those vessels which have rendered such faithful service to respective generations of submariners. Since the construction of Holland I for the Royal Navy in 1901, about 50 major ships. etc; have been employed on submarine support duties; in addition there is a host of lesser units and shore establishments which have played a no less important part. Many of the 'older' supports have been perpetual at 'Dolphin' by having their names allotted to blocks of buildings there:- Hazard, Rosario and Pandora spring to mind. The larger units have been arranged chronologically, whilst the lesser, but none the less essential ones, have been arranged alphabetically in an Appendix. Naturally many important events have never been recorded but older submariners may derive some pleasure in filling in the gaps when 'reminiscing' on these faithful old 'Mums'. Provenance: this came from the library of R. Honeywill and has the label inside cover. There is also a write up about Leslie Honeywill from the Wolborough Newton Abbot Parish magazine 1979.
