On offer is an original 1854 handwritten manuscript of medicinal recipes for Blackwash and Green Salve for Drawing Healing Sores, Cuts. Written in a neat script at the left margin: "This certificate got from Sam Palmer, March 3-1854." The text of the certificate contains 2 recipes for medicinal applications. The first is to make green salve for drawing & healing sores, mix Lard, Honey, Oil Amber, Pint Spirits Turpentine, Beeswax and (?sp) …grease, put all these in a pan and simmer them over a slow fire…let cool and put into close tin…it can be kept for years and is the best healing salve known from long experience. The second recipe is for making Blackwash [a mixture of calomel and limewater that is used on syphilitic sores], from the text: The following certificate to make what is called by Druggists - Blackwash - which is the most soothing that can be used for washing sores or bathing the skin where affected with pimples or eruptions of any kind breaking on the face or any part of the body. Take 1 Drachm corrosive supplement, 1 oz Lime water, put into a vile shook up until well mixed then apply as a wash - is a sure remedy. A rare original hand written document representing a 19th century approach for the medical treatment of syphilis and other medical conditions. This is a single sheet, 7 ¾" x 7 ¾", there are 3 horizontal creases, 1 vertical crease, unobtrusive faints spots of foxing, minuscule pin hole at intersection of center crease otherwise in excellent condition.
