1944 - 1945 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING THE LAST HORRIBLE MONTHS OF NAZI OCCUPATION IN THE HEART OF HOLLAND AND THE DIFFICULTIES OF THEIR NEW FREEDOM WHEN THE OCCUPATION FINALLY ENDS
875On offer is a small, intriguing, significant handwritten Dutch language World War II diary which details in everyday language the final horrible last days of the Nazi occupation of Holland and the invasion to drive them out. Running out of everyday supplies and food the Dutch were on the verge of death from starvation our unidentified author recounts the events of the day, inventories what few food and basics he has saved and traded off and then provides anecdotal references of the common shared experience of the destitute Dutch. Most interesting are entries wherein our author relates for example taking some milk from someone as a 'trade' for his pet cat the writer is sure that they stole and most likely ate. Horror is also on the author's mind as he relates the roundup of men in Hilversum and region which apparently where the writer is based. This is truly a heartbreaking read given that the Dutch were aware of the oncoming Allied victory yet still they starved and died before the supply trains and infrastructure could be rebuilt.
