1864 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT SURVEYOR'S FIELD NOTES AS HE SEARCHES FOR OIL IN CIVIL WAR ERA WEST VIRGINIA

On offer is an interesting handwritten manuscript field notes by pioneer surveyor H.S. Ambler Esq Field Notes of the Cow Creek Survey as evidenced by the faded but still legible cover of this Oct. 26th 1864 through November 11, 1864 in this 36 hand numbered page notebook. Research suggests that Mr. Ambler was in the business of oil well exploration in West Virginia. Names mentioned include Cow Creek, Schultze's Run, Spice Run and more. Here are some snippets: ' 26th Oct. 1864. S.S. Wards1st Lot on Cow Creek Beginning at a St on. left hand bank of said creek. Thence N.188.150P. croping ponahs(sp?) R. to a D W Cor. and 1 pine pointers. Thence S 92.8 to a Hickory Cor. 2. c.o.+1 Hickory pointers. Thence... to Beginning Containing 22A.95 P. 28th Oct 1864 S.S. Wards lot on Cow Creek, Beginning at a Sicamore on said creek. Thence....' and then further directions as above, from one tree to another, etc.' Intriguingly the last page of information the writer wrote; Amen Ben. K. Peirsol St. Maries, Va.
