1926 Manzanillo Letter from Author Manuel Navarro Luna to Havana Journalist Enrique Gay Calbó Regarding Luna’s Recent Work, “Siluetas Aldeanas”
12139On offer is a typed letter dated November 8, 1926, from Manzanillo, Cuba, signed in ink by Manuel Navarro Luna and addressed to Enrique Gay Calbó in Havana.
The letter responds to Gay Calbó’s published remarks on Navarro Luna’s recently issued work Siluetas Aldeanas (1926), specifically referencing commentary appearing in the journal Cuba Contemporánea. Navarro Luna writes:
“Acaso lo mejor y más acertado que se ha dicho en torno de mi libro Siluetas Aldeanas, es lo que acaba usted de escribir…” [“Perhaps the best and most accurate thing that has been said about my book Village Silhouettes is what you have just written…”]
Dated to the year of publication, the letter records a direct exchange between a provincial writer based in Manzanillo and a Havana-based critic, preserving both the moment of reception and the channel through which the work circulated in print.
