1947 Havana-Distributed Zenith Films S.A. Publicity Still Archive for Fuenteovejuna, a Spanish Golden Age Drama in the Mid-Century Cuban Film Circuit

On offer is a matched group of large-format black-and-white silver gelatin publicity stills for Fuenteovejuna, the 1947 Spanish film adaptation of Lope de Vega’s Golden Age drama of village resistance, feudal authority, and collective justice. Though the film itself was a Spanish production, this group relates to its Cuban distribution and publicity history. All of the stills were issued or handled by Zenith Films S.A., a Havana-based film distributor. Each photograph bears a printed lower-left presentation label reading “Zenith Films S.A. presenta: ‘Fuenteovejuna.’”

This is especially interesting as a surviving working publicity file rather than a loose assortment of film photographs. The stills share a repeated handwritten number, 1674, placed consistently along the upper margin.

Two versos are stamped “Zenith Films S.A.” and “UNIDAD -8-,” and one is further inscribed in pencil: “Fotos repetidas de la película Fuente-Ovejuna” [Repeated photographs from the film Fuente-Ovejuna]. The repeated numbering, distributor stamps, unit stamps, duplicate-photo notation, and edge evidence of mounting all suggest that the stills were retained, sorted, and used as part of a distributor’s or exhibitor’s working file.

One still appears to carry a small, partially legible studio or printer’s mark near the lower margin. This may provide additional evidence of local photographic processing or publicity production, but the mark is not yet fully deciphered and is therefore not relied upon here as a firm identification.

Together, the stills convey the cinematic scope of Fuenteovejuna as well as the physical apparatus by which the film was promoted for exhibition. For a Cuban collection, the value of this group lies in its documentation of pre-revolutionary film distribution infrastructure.

Condition: Fair to good, with significant evidence of working use. The stills show edge wear, softened and bumped corners, creasing, scattered staining, surface abrasions, pinholes or small punctures, silvering or chemical spotting, and areas of loss or disturbance to the photographic surface. Margins and versos retain adhesive residue, mounting tabs, and other evidence of prior affixing or display. These condition issues are visible, but they are also consistent with the group’s use as a working publicity or distribution file rather than as preserved collector photographs.
