Would you like to write a note on this for
the Church page? I don't want it for Book and Mr.
Doyle thinks your department might take over such things.
Thanks–-
Bill Deacon
“Mr. Doyle” may be Canadian politician Richard Doyle, who was also at The Globe and Mail from 1951.
William Arthur Deacon (1890–1977) was a pioneering Canadian literary critic and editor, best known as the country’s first full-time book reviewer. He began his career at The Manitoba Free Press and later became literary editor for Saturday Night, The Toronto Mail and Empire, and ultimately The Globe and Mail, where he helped shape national literary tastes from the 1930s to the 1960s. Deacon was instrumental in elevating Canadian literature, championing homegrown authors during a time when British and American works dominated public attention.
Joan Hollobon (1920–2019) was a groundbreaking Canadian medical journalist who joined The Globe and Mail in 1956 and reported there until her retirement in 1985. Known for her deeply researched and accessible writing, she helped revolutionize health reporting in Canada, covering public health policy, medical ethics, and scientific breakthroughs. During her early years at The Globe and Mail, she overlapped with William Arthur Deacon, though they worked in distinct editorial areas—Deacon in literature and Hollobon in news and health—representing the paper’s expanding commitment to specialist journalism.
This undated and unsigned typed note measures 8 x 6 inches. The left paper edges are browned, chipped, and missing some paper, with evidence of stapling. The item is age toned, more so on the left side, and creased along the horizontal. Fair condition.
