1662 Multi-Signature French Marriage Contract
00JT22Tax included.
17th-century marriage contract. A small inscription on this eight-page skin parchment states that on June 16, 1662, this document acts as a contract, division of wealth, and an act of recognizance that validates the marriage of George deMadeline and Jeanne Duportail. The document is bound by thread and signed by witnesses and a functionary (Faubier ??). Though a short document, this apparently binds the relationship of the two families. The tone suggests the woman involved appears to be as if chattel.
